On Care.
the value and practice of service
Why care about Care?
How might I solve problems for specific user groups? How might I genuinely add value to their experience?
How do I swallow my pride and remain fixated on designing digital products, face-to-face services, or even scientific research projects even when my initial ideas fail? How do I obsess over problem-solving rather than my personal solutions?
As a designer and a pre-med student, I believe answering these questions humbly and diligently is central to my present and future work. Care drives my motivation to do so and serve other.
How to do Care?
We are incapable of knowing everything, but I believe true care is driven from a deep understanding of those I serve. Thus, actively listening and seeking to understand others perspectives are key; care is a patient and humble practice.
When performing, user research, managing a student team, or speaking with hospice patients, I exercise efforts to strip myself of per-conceived biases and I build pathways to solicit feedback.
I am imperfect, but through trial and error and an open mind, I learn how to do care better.
Outcomes of Care
Care benefits all--servers and those served.
As Head of Product at Spectator, I led my team through the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite virtual everything, Zoom fatigue, and social deprivation, my team developed its first new product in years. Care enabled us to not only create our most user-centered and valuable service ever, but also reach record design & engineering productivity and staff buy-in.
Care also enabled my team and me to learn from our pitfalls in 2020 for an even stronger 2021.
