About Compost NYC
concept
Organics account for 40% of NYC trash. How might we eliminate the smelliest and dirtiest type of garbage from city streets?
Overview of Compost NYC

Opportunity Area
User interviews confirmed that New Yorkers 1. abhor how sidewalk garbage emits rancid smells and attract pests and 2. they share a desire to reduce it.
Our research on NYC's trash and waste management revealed that organic waste accounts for 40% of all city garbage and is the main culprit for producing odors and luring roaches and rodents.
IDing Target Users
There are so many stakeholders for trash on city streets: DSNY, residents, tourists, landlords, shopkeepers, and more.
After interviewing New Yorkers, we found many aspire to live greener and compost, but felt current compost infrastructure (all grass-roots) was too inconvenient, geographically and time wise.
Resolving Pain Points
Compost NYC bins resolve the principle pain points of compost infrastructure and sidewalk garbage:
> dries organic waste
> slows decomposition
> nulls smell
> enclosed drums keep out pests
> available 24/7
> conveniently located at schools/ and parks
